Night Time Routine
This thing started out when we were children. I don’t remember much about it as a child other than maybe being told to get pjs on, brush my teeth and say goodnight. Now my night time routine includes spending some time with my planner, doing any reflecting of the day and preparing myself for the next day. Next, I spend a few minutes rubbing lotion on my feet; otherwise they are Dry. Wash my face. Brush and floss. Brush my hair. Stretch. Put on a tiny bit of lotion that I love the smell, put on pajamas, plug in my phone, and get comfortable. It brings me peace. Every bit of it is done for a reason. And if I have to do without them because of forgetting, exhaustion or any other reason, it is missed but without penalty.
Sometimes when I have a hard time falling asleep because my brain is thinking a lot, I will catch myself and say ‘just focus on one thing’. That is usually enough to do the trick. If that doesn’t work and I keep having thoughts anyway, I gently tell myself to just stick with one of them. It doesn’t matter what it is, unless it’s creepy for whatever reason. I realize, trying to do this is usually enough to get me to settle down because it takes a lot of my remaining effort to remember one thing when falling asleep.
