Wanting What You Already Have

Wanting What You Already Have

December 18, 2022

I want things all the time. Often what I want is to stop feeling certain ways or for certain conditions not to be. We daydream, we consider if these wants are worthy, and spend another chunk of time being down on ourselves that we don’t already have these capabilities. This is the playground of our beautiful minds. They are supposed to operate this way.

If we aren’t careful, we can forget what it means to want what we already have. This isn’t the same as being grateful. I’m grateful for my life. I’m grateful for my family and friends. My pets are the best. This makes me smile. The list is endless.

So, how much time do you practice wanting what you already have when the list is so long? I’ve tried to practice wanting it all at once. The most you can do is get a general sense of gratitude. Practicing wanting what you have looks different. It looks like decluttering your heart and mind. You will know when you have let go of things…suddenly you’ll have time and space to care for what’s still there or maybe you can now see a new path to something you forgot about long ago.

What do you want to practice wanting that you already have? I have development and engineering education, design background, product design and a deep love for planning and helping others. Here I am—wanting to bring my planner to you. We can figure it out together. Every quarter, I check myself at the beginning of my planner to see whether I know what things I have and if I’m wanting them. Dust off some of your favorite cliche quotes (love it or leave it alone) and figure out what it looks like for you to have A Very Good Plan.
